Antietam Battlefield was created by the U.S. War Department in 1890 for the military to use as an outdoor classroom.
A Battlefield Board was established and they researched and created a series of fourteen battle maps known as the Carmen-Cope maps.
Named for board member and Union veteran Ezra Carmen and engineer Lt. Col. E.B. Cope who created them,
these maps document in great detail the landscape and the battlefield troop movements and are an invaluable resource for anyone interested in this battle.
